The effectiveness of the local black chicken breeding model

By Hoang Van Thai – The Leader of the local black chicken breeding group in Huoi Bac village, Pha Mu commune, Than Uyen district, Lai Chau province

Before the INKOTA project, other households and my family had raised chickens with corn and rice for a long time, but the farming situation was not good at all. Our chickens got sick again and again. It was not possible to up-scale our production. At most, we could only raise around 100 chickens, but only 60 of them survived to fully-grown. People also do not know how to handle when chickens are sick or which medicines to buy.

Since the INKOTA project started in 2021, we have established a farmer group that breeds local black chickens. I, along with my team members, learned how to raise and care for the chickens with guidance from experts hired by the project. Under the instruction, we were able to analyze our raising and breeding techniques and distinguish bad practices from good practices, so that we learned from experience and improved together. Especially, members can identify the symptoms as well as know how to prevent diseases for chickens in the farming process and how to vaccinate chickens at the right time.

Thanks to that, the members have been more confident in production. With the initial 50 chickens, up to now, some households can maintain up to 300 chickens, not to mention more than 200 eggs were laid in the process.

The first litter of chickens has been sold. According to the agreement of the group, each household only sells 20% of the total existing chickens, the rest will be maintained to expand the number of chickens. Following the group's plan, in the next two to three years, the local black chicken model will be spread out to the entire village to maintain a high-value traditional product, bringing income to our people.

Up to now, my family has 180 chickens, along with providing meat for the family, we have sold 48 chickens, each ranging from 2kg to 3kg per chicken with the price of VND 175,000/kg, adding income for the family. All thanks to the support of the project. I sincerely thank the project!
