Project title: Strengthen the self-help capacities of ethnic communities in Kim Boi District Hoa Binh Province Vietnam

Target Groups

  • The direct beneficiaries are people of 13 project communities (about 6.000 people). They are beneficiaries of the community small projects, livelihood models and of awareness-raising activities (90% of them are from ethnic groups of Muong and Dao).
  • 135 key members at village levels (68 women) are trained on the application of community management approach.
  • 260 people receive training on group business development and market-oriented production for income generation purpose.
  • Approximately 700 teachers and students at two secondary schools benefit from awareness-raising measures and active learning methodologies.
  • Approximately 70 people, including 60 Women’s Union leaders at district/commune levels and 10 communal Government officials participate in the project’s training sessions/workshops and dialogues.

The Project Goal

Sustainable village development is improved in Hoa Binh province.

Project Objective:

The self-management capacity of local people in village development is improved addressing local development issues.

Indicators of the objective:

  1. By the end of the project, at least 45 successful small - scale development projects (sub-projects) are self-managed by local people (self-managed in term of project planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating; a project is considered successfully managed when its objective is achieved).
  2. At least 25% of the total cost of small-scale development projects are covered by the local community.
  3. By the end of the project, as many as 60 farming households have increased their incomes by applying marketing orientation production approach without project support.

Activities

  1. Project introduction workshops at district and village levels.
  2. Capacity-building activities for local authorities and community key members.
  3. Thematic meetings on relevant policies and laws, gender issues, etc.
  4. Dialogues between villagers and local authorities.
  5. Approval meetings for community sub-projects and support self-management and implementation process.
  6. Good practice sharing meetings on experiences of self – management of sub-projects.
  7. Capacity building for teachers and students of two secondary schools (Child Right Convention; Positive Discipline; Facilitation Skills; Active Teaching Methods; Project design and Financial Management etc.
  8. Support implementation of sub-projects of two schools to address their schools challenges either on the improvement of school infrastructure or encourage students participation.
  9. Village meeting to discuss on strengths of villages in livelihood and set up FIGs (Farmer Interest Groups).
  10. Train FIGs members on value chain approach and business planning.
  11. Organize cross-field trips for FIGs to learn the experiences of households applied a value chain approach.
  12. Participatory survey for farmers to identify optimal products and to develop effective livelihood plans.
  13. Sharing meetings between FIGs members.
  14. Support small seed fund for FIGs in implementing their business plans and selling products (to help finance initial activities, such as travel cost, quality control or packaging…).
  15. M&E and management activities.
